I graduated!… now what?
There’s a great deal of happiness in me after graduating from Bilder Nordic’s 2-year photography course. I’m very excited to get started working as a photographer, although I’m going to miss my class mates, my mentors and the freedom to play around like we did. Although I’m looking forward to what’s still to come, I also feel a bit nervous about trying to get into the documentary photography industry on my own.
In this blog post, I’m letting you know what my plans are for the next year and what you can expect to see from me this next year. Below is a list of these plans, so that you can read only what’s interesting to you!
- Real Estate Photography
- VII Photo Agency Workshop
- Photo documentary: “WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE“
- Back to school?
1. Real Estate Photography
Since 2012, I’ve been working as a real estate photographer. Now that I’ve finished my 2-year course at Bilder Nordic, real estate photograpghy seems like a good place to keep using the camera while I focus on future projects and employment opportunities.
Before the summer break, I became Partner Photographer for the real estate photography collective Pixxip here in Oslo. This gives me more real estate photography assignments in Oslo, meaning it is profitable and easier for me to be based in Oslo. I will continue to work in various regions outside of Oslo, such as Trysil where I worked earlier.
2. VII Photo Agency Workshop
Under the tutelage of my former Bilder Nordic mentor Linda Bournane Engelberth and the extremely talented Danny Wilcox Frazier, I will be participating in a week-long photography workshop called “Berlin Night, Berlin Light: Exploring the Personal in Photography” this September in Berlin.
To me, this is a workshop where I hope to dive further into the roots of how I want to project my visions to the world, to learn from established photographers and to network with talented photographers outside of Norway. This is an investment in my carreer as a documentary photographer, so I cannot wait to get started! If you are interested in learning more about the workshop or want to participate yourself, visit this link.
3. Photo documentary: “WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE”
Before graduating Bilder Nordic, I got started on a project that’s been in my head for quite some time. It’s been in my notebook as a suggestion to the rest of my over-ambitious ideas during my education. However, this is one of those projects that I wouldn’t have done right by the first time around, so I’m glad it stayed in the sketch book for two years.
Within the next year, I’m going to further explore the lives of wolf hunters in Norway under the project name “WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE”. So far I feel that I’ve bearly scratched the surface of what is going to become one of my best projects ever done. I haven’t given it the time it needs, so during the next 12 months, I will be diving deeper into this and taking you with me on the journey!
4. Back to school?
Heh. Yes, maybe. When I started Bilder Nordic, I had some sense of what kind of photography I wanted to do. Bilder Nordic is a great school whether you know this or not, don’t get me wrong. Linda, which I mentioned previously, got me hooked on the documentary genre, and eventually I started exploring what would give me the upper hand if I were to become a full time photo journalist / documentary photographer.
I decided not to apply for the photo journalism bachelor degree at Oslo Met this spring because I didn’t feel ready for it yet. Even though I felt it would benefit my carreer a lot, I wanted to take at least a year to “stop and smell the flowers”, in a way. Now already, the thought of going back to school is starting to come back, so I might go back to school next year.
I love learning and evolving. That’s why I went to Bilder Nordic, why I’m going to Berlin this September and why I’m thinking about the photo journalism degree.
